Hi everyone!
I'm new here, and I'm pretty excited about reaching out to this community. I work for Teen Ink Magazine, now in its 20th year of publishing works for teens, by teens. We want to hear from teen and YA librarians across the country about how we can better serve you and your teens. Visit our site to read all of our content online. Like it? Hello everyone,
So I mentioned that my icon is a pic of our dwarf hamster,
Scooter. Scooter lives here in the Children's Room and has quite
the following among our patrons. However, some people were
shocked (rather impolitely, I might add) that Scooter is a DWARF
hamster. Several responses to that fact have been :
"Really? Are you sure???" or "Wow, that's a big
dwarf hamster" or "That's one fat dwarf
hamster!".
Let's be clear: perhaps I've been a little overzealous with
her…

Hello!
This isn't my first time blogging, but it is my first time finding a community of youth services librarians on the web! I'm always looking for new ideas on how to integrate technology into the Children's Room as well as ways of solving problems. So let me know what you're up to at your library!

Colleen Mondor came up with a fabulous idea -- have prominent bloggers interview YA authors in a frenzied week of virtual touring.
Here's the schedule -- take a look! Mitali Perkins, Justine Larbalestier, Brett Hartinger, Chris Crutcher, Holly Black, Eddie Campbell, and Cecil Castellucci are just some of the people being interviewed.

This morning I received a call from the County Human Resources department. I was offered the job that I had interviewed for about a month ago. I did accept the position and ever since, I've been doing a happy dance on every surface I can touch. Yeah! I'm a librarian!
I'll be working at elementary school in East Tennessee. It's a K-5 school of about 500 students. I do have a love for young adult literature and I will miss that but I am absolutely thrilled for this opportunity!

Ok, I'm spending the afternoon working on making our library-sponsored events reach a wider audience and allow for greater interactivity with whatever public connects to them...have any of you ever used Podcorps? Recording Spoken-Word Events Worldwide -

This is in response to the article posted
here.
CNN has an article about Stacy Snyder who was denied her teaching certificate and education degree after one of her mentoring teachers saw a MySpace photo with the caption "drunken pirate." As someone who is 3 days from graduation, it starts to scare me. Not that I have any dangerous photos on any social networking sites, but still, the idea scares me.…

So as you've all been anxiously awaiting, here's some of my thoughts about the Tennessee Library Association Conference that I attended this weekend. I haven't been to any state conferences before this and had fun. As a school media specialist, I'm not sure that I would try to attend every year, but it's nice to go when I have a chance.
First of all, the keynote speaker of the event was ALA President-Elect
Dr. Lorie… Continue

So tomorrow I'm taking the next two days off of interning with high schoolers to spend time with fellow librarians in the state of Tennessee.
I've just mapped out my game plan of sessions to hit in the next two days. I'll be sure to post musings after I return. I'm sure you'll be anxiously awaiting my return...

Hi,
I'm from Sweden and would like to know your opinion about making library profiles on MySpace. I have understood that many libraries in the US do this. I don't think any Swedish libraries have started there yet. I have tried to convince some, but they are either not interested or don't have time. Some people say we should leave this place to the young and not interfere by making profiles of public authorities at their space. What do the teens say? Has the library work a

I've been in Children's services since I graduated from library school - six years ago. During school, I always knew what was new and interesting in technology, but now it is a little harder to keep up. I am so busy with the things that I do on a daily basis, that it is hard to take the time to be involved with what is happening in the bigger world. So when I saw this Ning, I thought it would be a way to stay involved in a different way. I'm glad to be here and hoping to have enough time to part…

I had the pleasure of visiting the Eric Carle Museum about a year ago. Located in Amherst, MA, it displays children's book illustrations. On the day I went, it just so happened that Chris Raschka, the 2006 winner of the Caldecott Award, was speaking. Not only was he entertaining, but he told us how the words of a picture book inspire his drawings. I encourage anyone in the New England area, or anyone visiting this locale to head over to the museum. It's great fun!

So I've posted very similar introductions on my other two Ning blogs, but I'm feeling different so we'll try something new here.
I'm 29 days (and counting!) away from graduating with my MS from UT's School of Informaion Sciences. I'll have my teacher certification in hand and I'm determined to stay in East Tennessee as a teacher-librarian. Somewhere along the way I found that term and really I think it has a nicer ring than "school media specialist." I'll answer to anything, though, so…

This is great! I'm in my 5th year as a school librarian, 5 years classroom teaching before that. I've enjoyed using technology for a long time, but haven't often been in an environment that's conducive to its use. Currently I work in a low-income, Title I middle school. We're technology-rich and I'm trying to get it used, but still have some old school staff who aren't interested. I recently completed the Five Weeks to a Social Library course, so I'm really rarin' to go! It takes time, though. H…

Our Library Media Makers Club has been running since the end of June 2006. I took the idea of training children and teens to do traditional storytelling and combined it with free, easily accessible web 2.0 technologies, existing computers and computer equipment available at my library, and my passion for teaching kids and people about citizen's media and the tools that are now available to them and developed an afternoon program which meets once a week throughout the year. It…

I've been thinking a lot about how we deliver knowledge, information and culture to people who use our libraries lately. As I see it, public libraries need to allow people to create as part of our services, and assist, if we can, people in sharing their creative stuff in all of those areas by helping them join a large global community and finding any multitude of self-organizing social networks out there.
I feel like public libraries are missing the whole point of the rapid social, cul…
